Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Amendment Rule, 1994

            G.S.R.  110-In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 289 read with section 458 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 (44 of 1958), the Central Government hereby makes the following rules to amend the Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Rules, 1990, namely:- 

1.(1)      These rules may be called the Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Amendment Rules, 1994. 

(2)    They shall come into force from the date of publication in the Official Gazette. 

            2.         In the Merchant Shipping (Fire Appliances) Rules,1990 (hereinafter referred to as the said rules) : 

(1)     after rule 57, the following rule shall be inserted, namely : 


(1)        Paint lockers and flammable liquid lockers of deck area 4m2 and more shall be providing with a fire extinguishing system enabling the crew to extinguish a fire without entering the space.  Fixed arrangements as specified below shall be provided:-                       

(a)        CO2 system, designed for 40% of the gross volume of the space; 

(b)        Dry powder system, designed for atleast 0.5 kg power/m2                       

(c)        Water spraying system, designed for 5.1m2, min; 

(2)        Water spraying system shall be connected to the ship's main system. 

(3)        Besides the systems mentioned in sub-para (1) and (2) other systems may be accepted. 

(4)        For lockers of deck area less than 4m2, CO2 or dry-power fire extinguishers shall be accepted."                       

            (2)        In Schedule IX to the said rules, in clause 3, in sub-section (a) at the end, after the words "carrying any cargo, the following words and figures shall be inserted namely :- 

"for which the keel is laid or which are at similar stage of construction on or after July, 1992."
